Protests and Propaganda
The Black Panther Party, throughout its existence, developed several ways to express their viewpoints. They frequently held protest events, such as protests, marches, speeches, and other demonstrations. These events, while sometimes peaceful, often included the carrying of arms; this contributed greatly to the violent image of the party.
The party was also largely political, striving to implant several of their members into government positions. It was under the party that Oakland's first black mayor, Lionel Wilson, was elected. Additionally, the party produced different propaganda material over the course of its reign. The most notable of these was the serial newspaper "The Black Panther: Black Community News Service", while having many contributing writers, operated directly under party control. |
